Turner Parrish is known for only two piano solos, Trenches and Fives. The two are very similar but Trenches is faster and played with great abandon, the right hand jumping wildly to different registers. Unlike most pieces of this sort, Trenches uses only a four-to-the-bar bass, perhaps necessitated by the extreme tempo. Another feature of both solos is a bugle call, similar to that found in Yancey Stomp by Jimmy Yancey.
Turner Parrish’s recordings can be found onĀ Barrelhouse Piano Blues & Stomps 1929-1933.
