‘Blind’ Leroy Garnett was a talented player in a mostly urban style, not too far removed from Chicago South Side, who made relatively few recordings. His best-known solo is Chain ‘Em Down which is a tour de force of restless right hand figures over a bouncy accompaniment. It is unfortunate that this recording is marred by too-frequent shouted “encouragements” from James ‘Boodle-It’ Wiggins. Garnett’s other piano solo recording, Louisiana Glide, is a brilliant bit of piano playing and is thankfully encouragement-free, but in a different style more akin to ragtime.
‘Blind’ Leroy Garnett’s recordings can be found on Boogie Woogie & Barrelhouse Piano Vol. 2 by Document Records.
