One of the few white artists that you will read about on this site, Euday Bowman is mostly known for his famous 12th Street Rag. However, his sheet music publications include just about as many blues as rags. Richard Zimmerman makes the case that because Bowman published with local Texas companies, he was more isolated than most composers of his time and thus less influenced by the conventions of Tin Pan Alley. As a result his blues and rags reflect folk sources more closely.
Richard Zimmerman included all of Bowman’s blues in the compilation Gems of Texas Ragtime. Unfortunately, it is now out of print but copies do surface from time to time on Amazon and eBay.
Euday Bowman made only one recording, that of his 12th Street Rag. Although the 12th Street Rag was published in 1914, Bowman’s recording was not made until 1948 after it became unexpectedly popular due to a novelty-style recording by Pee Wee Hunt. Bowman’s version was included on the vinyl disc, Piano Ragtime of the Forties. It is long out of print but copies can be found frequently on eBay.
