Rob Cooper was a Texas pianist in the same Santa Fe tradition as Robert Shaw and Conish ‘Pinetop’ Burks. As a result his recordings often have a strong ragtime component, particularly his only self-titled recordings, West Dallas Drag and West Dallas Drag #2. Most of Cooper’s recordings were made as accompanist to Joe Pullum but McKinney Street Stomp and Blues With Class are essentially piano solos with accompanying banter by Pullum. McKinney Street Stomp is notable for being a rendition of the Santa Fe standard, The Ma Grinder. Another standard is The Cows, recorded by Pullum and Cooper as Cows See That Train Comin’. Though lyrically different, musically it is nearly identical to Conish Burks’s Mountain Jack Blues and Black Boy Shine’s Brown House Blues.
Most of Rob Cooper’s recordings, including his solos, can be found on Joe Pullum Vol. 1.
