South Side Chicago

The South Side Chicago style during the 1920s was essentially the Chicago equivalent of New York Stride. Both styles were at least as much jazz as blues, with the influence of ragtime still fresh. The ragtime marching bass was frequently heard but was then mixed with other figures, including the walking bass and the undulating figure known from Albert Ammons’s recording of Suitcase Blues. (example to come) In addition, in the ragtime bass the octaves were often replaced by 10ths. There were often walking 10ths also. (examples to come)
